Wooster Claims Outright OCC Championship
The Wooster boy's basketball team cut down the nets after securing an outright Ohio Cardinal Conference championship with a 51-34 victory over Mount Vernon.
It's the General second league title since 2004, winning the other just a few years ago in 2017.
They improved to 11-0 in OCC play and 15-1 overall with a total team effort that saw 15 assists on their 21 made field goals against the Jackets. Senior guard Reece Mitchell led the squad with 14 points and 5 rebounds, while Ezra McKee, Micah McKee and Brayden Hamilton each scored nine.
Wooster had a double-digit edge in the second quarter evaporate to four by the half, but used an 11-0 run in the third to boost their advantage up to 45-32. The Generals then held Mount Vernon without a field goal in the final frame, outscoring the Jackets 7-2 in the fourth as they controlled the tempo to preserve the win.
Although they've wrapped-up the conference title with one OCC game remaining against Ashland on Friday, Wooster closes out the season with a challenging stretch against Orrville, state-ranked Canton McKinley, at Medina Highland and ISA Academy before entering tournament play.
Mount Vernon drops to 6-10 on the year and will next be in action at Madison on Friday.
