Whippets Hold Off Colts, Stay Unbeaten In MOAC
A strong fourth quarter for Shelby helped the Whippets stay undefeated in MOAC play with a 59-51 win over defending league champion Clear Fork in a back and forth affair at Shelby High School.
The Colts entered the contest coming off their biggest win of the season and rode Brady Tedrow's seven 1st quarter points to an 18-15 advantage. Clear Fork then scored the first bucket of the second quarter but would be held scoreless the rest of the frame as the Whippets seized a 27-20 halftime lead.
The third quarter saw the Whippets miss a number of shots in the paint and the Colts took advantage by outscoring Shelby 16-8 to make it a 1-point game at 37-36 heading into the fourth. Brennan South would pour in nine of his team-best 20 points in the final quarter but both Jonny Devito and TJ Pugh did the same for the Whippets, helping Shelby pull away with 18 combined points down the stretch.
South was the lone Colt in double-figures scoring as Ethan Delany posted nine points and Jared Scott had six for a Clear Fork team that slips to 4-8 overall, 2-4 in league play.
Devito finished the night with a game-high 21 points while Pugh added 15, Grant Hiatt chipped-in with seven and Cody Lantz had six, all coming in the fourth.
Shelby improves to 9-1, 6-0 and will travel to Ontario (7-2, 5-1) on Saturday for a key MOAC matchup.
