SHELBY -- The top-seeded Shelby Whippets raced by #7 Vermilion for the D2 sectional championship, dispatching the Sailors 71-36 behind senior forward T.J. Pugh's 31 points.

 

It was a slow start playing in front of their home fans for the Whippets (18-3) who fell behind 13-10 after the first quarter of play. Pugh would begin to dominate in the second where he dropped a dozen of Shelby's 26 points to give them a 36-18 advantage at the half.

 

The Sailors (8-14) found no answers for the high octane Whippets offense in the second half, as Cody Lantz dropped 15 and seven others got into the scoring column for Shelby. The #1 Whippets extended their lead to 56-27 entering the fourth and cruised to the finish line, advancing to the Ashland District semifinals to face #6 Huron.
