Tygers Win Regional Over Streaks In OT
The Mansfield Senior football team is headed to the state Final Four after knocking off Sandusky 15-9 in overtime to claim the Division III Region 10 Championship at Clyde High School.
The second-seeded Tygers went up 2-0 early in the first quarter on a botched Blue Streak punt snap and later built a 9-0 edge with 2:45 left in the frame with Terrance Flickinger busting his way in for a 3-yard score. Sandusky matched the touchdown with a 55-yard strike from Michael Franklin to Noah Caston but missed the extra point, making it 9-6 early in the second, a score that would hold until midway through the final quarter.
Both defenses were impressive, with Senior High holding the fifth-seeded Blue Streaks to just 232 yards of offense while Mansfield produced just 276, but turned the ball over twice.
Isaac Roop would hit a 34-yard field goal to even the score at 9-9 with 6:54 to play which led the contest into overtime after the Tygers missed a go-ahead FG attempt in the closing minutes.
In the extra session, Sandusky would have a short field goal try blocked by CJ Ellerbe, setting up Mansfield Senior with a chance to close out their first Regional Championship which Michigan State commit Angelo Grose delivered on a 5-yard TD run to end the game before being mobbed by his teammates in the end zone.
The 12-1 Tygers set a school record for wins with the victory, advancing to face Aurora for a spot in the Division III Championship. Sandusky finishes their year as Regional runners-up at 9-4.
