ELIDA --- State #2 Lima Shawnee (24-1) got an incredible performance from senior forward George Mangas in the Indians return to Regionals, outdueling the Shelby Whippets (20-4) 76-67 for a spot in the D2 Elida Regional Finals.
Mangas would eclipse the 2,000 career points mark by dropping a game-best 39 points in the contest, but got pushed throughout the night in a scoring battle with Shelby's TJ Pugh. With his Whippets falling behind 29-19 after the 1st quarter, Pugh began to take over offensively making 11-19 shot attempts for a team-high 32 points.
The deficit would be trimmed to 42-36 by the halftime break before a huge scoring run by Shelby put them in the drivers seat late in the game. Shelby led 58-57 after three periods and pushed its advantage to 63-57 when Grant Hiatt scored five straight points early in the fourth, but Shawnee would counter with a 14-0 run to claim the win.
