Upper's District Game-Winner Stuns Norwalk
Top-seeded Upper Sandusky didn't lead in the Division II Mansfield District Championship until the final second where senior Brett Montgomery splashed a game-winning triple to knock off defending champ Norwalk 60-59.
The Truckers (18-8) jumped out to a 9-0 lead just 1 minute and 20 seconds into the game, controlling a 20-14 advantage into the second quarter. Garrett Obringer would drop 11 of his 17 first half points in the frame, drilling five triples to help Norwalk build a 36-27 halftime cushion.
The Rams deficit would be trimmed down to four at 50-46 by the end of the third where senior Evan Young poured in a dozen points. Norwalk then pushed their advantage back near double-figures in the early stages of the fourth quarter but Cam McCreary helped fuel an Upper comeback, putting up nine points in the period to see his Rams down a single possession in the closing seconds.
McCreary then drove the lane on an isolation play and found Montgomery open near the top of the key where he banged the game-winning 3-pointer to seize the district title.
Obringer led all scorers with 21 pts with backcourt mate Will Gelhausen adding 16 and Ryan Sowders nine.
Young finished with 20 pts, McCreary 16 and Montgomery 12 to help lead Upper Sandusky to the championship.
Next up for the 24-1 Rams is the Regional Semifinals at Bowling Green State University on Thursday.
