Grover Breaks Lucas Scoring Record In OT Win
There's a new all-time scoring leader for the Lucas girls basketball program who saw senior guard Jessie Grover rewrite the record books in a 51-49 overtime win against visiting Mount Gilead.
On the same night the Cubs football team was honored with a state runner-up banner for making a championship run in the fall, Grover would drop 23 points to break the school's career scoring mark with a new record of 1,463 points.
Making history wouldn't come easy for Lucas (17-4), however, who were tested throughout the night by a talented Indians squad, led by senior guard Maddie Fitzpatrick. Mount Gilead (16-5) would hold a 10-9 edge after the first, maintaining the lead with a 21-18 halftime advantage.
Fitzpatrick scored eight of her team-high 20 points in the third, but the Cubs would overtake them on the scoreboard at 36-35 headed into the fourth with an 18-14 margin in the frame. Grover would carry her team offensively in the fourth, notching seven of Lucas' dozen points to help force overtime at the Cub Cave.
Both teams struggled in the extra session to find their offense, as the Cubs only needed a single bucket to close out a hard-fought victory, outscoring the Indians 3-1 in OT.
Outside of Jessie's record-setting performance, Lucas received a dozen points from Paige Arnold seven by Shelby Grover and Morgan Sweat added five. Dakota Shipman and Holly Gompf joined Fitzpatrick in double-figures with 13 and 11 points respectively for Mount Gilead.
