AKRON -- What looked like a runaway victory for Warren J.F.K. turned into a thrilling finish at the Division IV Regional Semifinals at Firestone High School in Akron where Lucas stormed back from a 16 point deficit to challenge for the lead but would fall to the Eagles, 54-48.
A sluggish start would put the Cubs (19-8) in a 10-0 hole to start the game but would battle back to within 13-8 entering the second quarter where Lucas started to control the pace of the game, but still found themselves trailing 25-18 at the half. Leading scorer Cameron Hollobaugh took over the game in the third, using his strong frame to dominate the offensive glass as JFK (14-4) went on a 17-1 spurt to seize control of the contest.
Then enter Cubs senior Riley Gossom who buried a triple to end the third quarter and delivered another 3-pointer to open the fourth which sparked an inspired Lucas comeback. With our Cub Cave Carry-Out Player of the Game Ethan Sauder leading the way with 14 points, the Cubs would pull within a single possession in the closing seconds with opportunities to take the lead. Missed free throws by Lucas and clutch shooting from the foul line by the Eagles would eventually close out a hard-fought victory.
