Last Minute TD Sends Lucas
To State Championship
An unbelievable touchdown in the final minute will send Lucas to the Division VII State Championship who stun Harvest Prep with a 15-12 come from behind win in the Final Four at Alumni Stadium in Columbus.
Defense and lack of execution was the name of the game for basically the entire first half as the Cubs gave away a pair of fumbles but came up with a huge defensive stand to keep the game scoreless through two quarters of action.
The first explosive play came in the form of a 75-yard sprint to the end zone by Ethan Sauder that gave Lucas a 7-0 advantage midway through the third. The Warriors wasted no time responding with a scoring drive of their own, capped-off by a short Javon Eggert TD run, but the Cubs defense shutdown their 2-point conversion attempt to maintain a 7-6 lead.
Harvest Prep would connect on a 76-yard TD toss to Rashaun Goines with 7:35 that seemingly swung momentum in favor of the Warriors, but the Lucas D again held strong on a 2-point conversion attempt to make it 12-7. On their ensuing drive, the Cubs offense finally sustained their first long drive of the contest, moving the ball inside the Warriors red zone but found themselves in an improbable 4th & Goal situation from the 13-yard-line.
Running an unscripted play that Lucas had never practiced at any time this season, Logan Niswander found Riley Mounts in the end zone with just 54 seconds remaining for the biggest touchdown in program history. The Cubs defense would then force Harvest Prep (12-2) to turn the ball over on downs to seal a 15-12 victory.
Lucas (12-2) now advances to face small school power Maria Stein Marion Local (12-2) for the State Championship at 10 am on Saturday at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.
