#5 Lexington vs #6 Shawnee
Lexington Punches Final Four Ticket
Defeats Shawnee 3-2
The Lexington Minutemen are state-bound after claiming the Division II Region 6 Championship with a 3-2 victory over Lima Shawnee at Bassett's Field in Port Clinton.
It was the #6 Indians who lit up the scoreboard first, Connor Neidemire struck a shot just under the crossbar off a free kick to go up 1-0 at the 28:20 mark of the opening half. From that point forward, the 5th-ranked Minutemen dictated most of the action as they penetrated Shawnee's 4-5-1 formation with precision passing and movement.
Gabe Hamilton would eventually deliver the equalizer with 5:31 left in the first, finding the left corner of the net on a feed from Blake Webster. Lexington continued to apply heavy offensive pressure, claiming the lead 12 minutes into the second half on a goal from All-Ohioan Ryan Parker.
With the Indians selling out on the offensive end late in the match, Gavin George got loose for a break opportunity to seal the win by scoring with 3:29 remaining to extend Lexington's advantage to 3-1. Shawnee would score a meaningless goal in the closing seconds, making the final score 3-2.
For the match, the Minutemen out-shot the Indians 13-6 with keeper Kaleb Rinehart making four saves.
Lexington (21-1-0) advances to face #9 Warren Howland (20-0-1) in the state semifinals on Wednesday at 7 pm. Shawnee finishes the best season in school history at 19-2-0, both losses were to the Minutemen.
