HOWARD -- The East Knox Bulldogs are sectional champions for the first time in 30 years knocking off rival Danville 45-34.

 

The #17 Blue Devils put up a fight in the first half against a #5 Bulldogs squad that had been in quarantine until Thursday as East Knox led after one 13-10, but Danville answered with a 10-7 second quarter to even the game at 20 going into the break.

 

East Knox shook off the rust in the third quarter outscoring Danville 12-3 to take a 32-23 lead into the fourth, thanks to a 9-0 run to end the quarter, but once again the Blue Devils answered cutting the deficit to 5 at 39-34 with just under 2 minutes left in regulation.

 

Our Knox Community Hospital Player-of-the-Game Weston Melick then hit the biggest shot of the season for East Knox hitting a layup while getting fouled to extend the game to three possessions. It would be the closest Danville would get.

 

Melick led all scorers for the Bulldogs with 16 points while Shane Knepp also scored in double figures with 11 points.

 

Darren Mickley led the Blue Devils with 9 points while Max Payne added 7 points.
