Springfield vs East Knox
Springfield Ends East Knox State Run
The historic run by the East Knox football team came to a close at the hands of undefeated New Middletown Springfield in the Division VI State Semifinals, suffering their first loss of the season 42-14.
Tigers sophomore star QB Beau Brungard had a monster performance, rushing for 233 yards on 17 carries and 3 TD's, including a 58 yard run to the end zone to start the scoring with 2:20 remaining in the opening frame. The Bulldogs would match the score on a Weston Melick 2-yard run to make it 7-7, but Springfield took a 14-7 advantage into the half on a short David Duvall scoring run.
Brungard would rip off a 75 yard rushing TD to stun East Knox early in the third, then bolted 15 yards for another Tigers score before tossing a TD pass at the 4:58 mark of the third quarter for a commanding 35-7 cushion. Melick added his second TD of the night with a 42-yard grab on a 4th & 10 to trim the deficit to three scores but that's as close as they'd get, ending their season in the Final Four.
Melick finished the night with 6 catches for 89 yards, scoring both Bulldogs TD's while senior standout Caleb Gallwitz, who rushed for 2,790 yards and 48 touchdowns in 2019, was held without a score for the first time all season.
East Knox finishes the year at 13-1 as KMAC & Regional champions for the first time, setting a school record for wins.
Springfield remains unbeaten at 14-0 and will face state #1 Anna 13-1 for the D6 State Championship on Dec 6 at 10 am.
