Shelby Tops #3 Col. Crawford In Battle Of
20+ Win Squads
SHELBY --- The Shelby Whippets finished the regular season with a momentum-building victory over D3 state-ranked Colonel Crawford 5-1.
The #3 Eagles (22-2) struck first in the top of the third when Mason McKibben singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Micah Thomas RBI groundout.
The Whippets (21-2) answered in the bottom of the third tying the game at 1 after Marek Albert and Marshall Shepherd led the inning off with singles. After a pop out to short, Logan Green singled in Albert. Jeremy Holloway then gave Shelby the lead with a 2RBI double to make it 3-1.
Colonel Crawford threatened to get on the board in the top of the fifth putting runners on the corners with one out, but a failed squeeze play and a fly out to center ended the threat.
Shelby then added an insurance run in the fifth and sixth innings scoring on a throwing error and a Shepherd RBI single to finish the scoring.
Both teams have a bye to start the tournament and will play scrimmages to start the week with the Eagles taking on Upper Sandusky while the Whippets face Galion.
