Arrows Take OT Victory At Shelby

An evenly matched battle between Ashland and Shelby needed an extra session to crown a winner, with the Arrows knocking off Shelby 67-63 in overtime.

A hot start by Ashland (6-10) put them in early control as sophomore Luke Denbow ran off 13-consecutive points to fuel the Arrows to a 20-13 first quarter lead. The Whippets (13-3) then responded in the second by outscoring Ashland 16-11 to get within 31-29 by the half.

Both teams would struggle offensively in the third, playing to a 10-10 stalemate before going back and forth throughout the final frame until the closing seconds. The Arrows would have possession in a tie game with a chance to win but Denbow misfired his attempt and Shelby's TJ Pugh rebounded and would be inexplicably fouled by Ashland senior Mitchell Heilman, setting up a 1-and-1 attempt with less than a second remaining.

Pugh would miss the front end, however, forcing an overtime session where the Arrows used clutch free throw shooting to outscore the Whippets 11- 7, claiming a quality victory on the road.

Denbow would finish the night with a game-high 22 points with teammate Eli White adding 14 and 7 rebounds, Heilman put up 15 and 7 boards and freshman Grayson Steury chipped-in with 10 pts.

Cody Lantz led Shelby with 20 pts and 11 rebs while Pugh had 19 pts and 5 assists.
